Hi,

I don't know if this will be useful to others but me, but it saved me a lot of time renaming files manually.

In the Dundjinni Archive at www.gmsyndicate.com/djfanart.html, a lot of the file and folder names begin with a sequence of three characters - capital letters and/or digits - followed by an underscore. Removing that from all of them is a major pain.

So I made this AppleScript. It is designed to remove the first four characters of any visible item in the front window of the desktop, provided the fourth character is an underscore "_". This will obviate the need for tedious manual removing those pesky four random-ish characters.

AppleScript, readme with description, usage notes and a usage tip zipped and attached: Trim_Archive_Names.zip

Enjoy,

U∂in

Thanks, U∂in. This should save me a lot of time. It will also be the first time
I've (knowingly) used AppleScript.

Aegean, yes, it's only for Macs. But there are plenty of free file renaming
utilities for Windows already available. A forum search should find them, if
you need one.

Just wanted to thank you again for this handy script, U∂in. I finally got
around to trying it out and it's very useful. As you suggested, I compiled it
into an app and set a finder window shortcut to it. Works like a charm. This
is going to save me a lot of time and effort.

You're quite welcome. It gives me such a warm, fuzzy feeling inside helping
others (or was it swallowing those mittens, I can't quite decide).

MultRen from PC Magazine also is a pretty good freeware file renaming utility. I think the website adds those characters, which are easy enough to delete prior to uploading files...
